Canonical URL

The one URL search engines should treat as the main version of a page when several show the same content. You can suggest it, but Google makes the final choice.

A canonical URL is the version of a page that a search engine treats as the main one when several URLs show the same or very similar content, such as with tracking parameters, or http and https. It’s the one that gets shown and collects the signals.

You suggest it: redirects and rel="canonical" are strong signals, a sitemap is a weak one. Google can still choose another, and Search Console then reports “Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user”. See what the indexing statuses mean.
